MeeBlip

The hackable digital synth

The Internets have spoken, and it seems my very hastily-composed, live-played sound demos haven’t been, shall we say, universally beloved. I think it’s also how I approach something new; I usually try to push it to its squealing periphery. I can just as easily understand wanting some meat and potatoes sounds, though, so James Grahame has composed a quick bassline demo – something that might be fun to try out yourself when your MeeBlip arrives for those of you who have already ordered one. (We’ll have more over coming days and weeks, though probably not with one blog post for each one!)

Meeblip bassline demo by cdm

James describes what you’re hearing:

Oscillator A & B slightly detuned, square wave on A and sawtooth on B. FM turned all the way up, distortion on. The filter resonance turned way up (hence the chirpy squeal) and the filter cutoff knob is initially open, then twiddled a bit to help the filter chirp. At the end, I just slowly turn the cutoff down. the VCF envelope modulation is mapped to MIDI velocity, which adds some sonic movement.

I’m really excited to hear the sounds people make when these MeeBlips get into your hands.

Yeah that’s tight. Gonna haz me  a little meeblip sqwak box soon — can’t wait! Between it and my Micron, there will be no stopping me from cheap, lush, plastic, hackable, digital, egalitarian, corny, fun, stupid, awesome, wicked sonic kung fu.
